We invite you to join us on Thursday, September 10th, for an afternoon of Plein Air Painting at Surf Point. This session is presented in collaboration with Indigo Arts Alliance (IAA) and facilitated by Maine-based artist and IAA David C. Driskell Fellow Raquel P Miller.
This event series is a chance to work outside on Surf Point's 45-acre grounds, drawing inspiration from the coastline, fields, gardens, wooded trails, marshland and architecture. Each session is led by a local artist, with open work time followed by an optional sharing of work at the end of the session. Participants are asked to bring their own painting supplies and materials.
What to Expect

This is a self-guided opportunity to spend time making work outdoors at Surf Point. It is not a formal class or instructional workshop. Participants should bring whatever materials they prefer and be prepared to work independently.
After a brief welcome and site orientation, participants will walk to their chosen painting or drawing spot with their supplies. Sites vary in distance from the parking area and may involve grass, dirt roads, uneven ground, or rocky shoreline. Closer locations with relatively easier access are also available. Please bring only what you can comfortably carry and wear footwear and clothing appropriate for the terrain and weather. The event will take place entirely outdoors, rain or shine. One designated bathroom will be available. If you have questions about site accessibility, please contact us before the event.
The session will close with an optional group gathering to share and discuss work made during the session. This conversation is intended as a relaxed community-building opportunity and a way to reflect together on the experience of working on the land.

Raquel P Miller
Born and adopted from Cuenca, Ecuador, Raquel is an artist living and working in Biddeford, Maine. Through painting and ceramics, she is interested in unearthing the unexpressed and revealing what cannot be seen–exploring emotions, memory, grief and dreams.
She received a BA in English with minors in Studio Art and Spanish from the University of Southern Maine in 2017.
Residencies and awards include a Haystack BIPOC Fellowship (2022); SPACE Gallery Artist Residency in Portland, Maine (2023, 2025); Indigo Arts Alliance’s Black Seed Studio Residency and David C. Driskell Fellowship (2024); and a Medomak Fiberarts Fellowship (2026).
Her work has been displayed online, in New York at Collarworks (Troy), Deanna Evans Projects (NYC); in Washington at Soil Gallery (Seattle); in New Hampshire at See Saw Art (Rochester) and University of New Hampshire Gallery of Art (Durham), and throughout Southern Maine at the Harlow, Engine, Buoy Gallery, New System Exhibitions, W.O.LF., Alice Gauvin Gallery, Waterville Creates, Gallery B, UNE Art Gallery, and River Tree Arts, with a duo-show Memories to Give at 82 Parris in October of 2025.
Her upcoming solo show at 205 Ocean Avenue Studios opens in September of 2026.
